"Introduction in Software and Hardware"

This course is planned for secondary school students (ages ranging from 11 to 16 years old) who want to get elementary skills of working in operating systems, to learn about the computer structure and main kinds of software. Skills and concepts, important for further computer education, are formed during the period of studying.

PROGRAM

During the period of studying students should get knowledge on the following topics:

  • commands, their properties, a program as a sequence of commands, data;
  • main functional blocks of the computer (processor, RAM, disc memory, mother board, input and output devices);
  • disc memory structure, files, file names, file types, file system, directory, a path to a file, navigation in a file system;
  • command files (batch-files);
  • basic information about MS-DOS operating system: functions, launching, command line, main commands, configuration, starting programs;
  • Windows operating system: functions, launching, basic interface elements, configuration, starting programs;
  • Far Manager: functions, launching, functional keys, menu, configuration, starting programs;
  • archiving of data; functions of archivers, archivers for Windows;
  • local and global networks; Internet;
  • functions and properties of operational environment;
  • computer sound interpretation; programs for working with sound;
  • scale of notation, number position.

During the period of studying students should get practical skills in the following areas:

  • working with input devices (keyboard, mouse), executing MS-DOS commands, Windows, Far Manager, navigation in a file system and changing it;
  • copying, deleting, renaming files;
  • making a simple program - a command file (batch-file);
  • starting programs from different interfaces;
  • making and editing text files;
  • archiving and unarchiving files using archivers;
  • working in text and graphical editors (Notepad, Wordpad, Paint);
  • animation, sorting slides in MS PowerPoint;
  • making an electronic presentation or an advertisement movie in MS PowerPoint;
  • MS Word:
    • text editing, fonts, styles;
    • drawing, elementary graphics, WordArt;
    • using histograms, graphs, tables;
  • MS Excel:
    • calculation in tables (statistics, finance, etc.), working with formulas;
    • construction of graphs and diagrams;
    • registration of one`s own mailbox in the Internet;
    • information search in the Internet;

Length of the course is 98 hours (one school year)
